Proprioceptive knowledge of eye position.

چکیده

The peripheral and central apparatus for extraretinal (non-visual) sensing of eye position by proprioception (inflow) is documented. The functional significance of this inflowing signal is shown by its role in (1) providing oculomotor stability in fixation and conjugacy, (2) specification of visual direction, (3) development of some visual functions, and (4) depth and vergence responses. Inflow is seen as a slowly-operating calibrator of eye position, with outflow signals read out from the underlying inflow signal. Good "preparations" for studying inflow include humans having their extraocular muscles surgically manipulated in some way for treatment, or those with some deficit in the afferent pathways. A complete understanding of the oculomotor system, in normal and pathological conditions, demands the inclusion of inflow.

The time course of the tonic oculomotor proprioceptive signal in area 3a of somatosensory cortex.

A proprioceptive representation of eye position exists in area 3a of primate somatosensory cortex (Wang X, Zhang M, Cohen IS, Goldberg ME. Nat Neurosci 10: 640-646, 2007). This eye position signal is consistent with a fusimotor response (Taylor A, Durbaba R, Ellaway PH, Rawlinson S. J Physiol 571: 711-723, 2006) and has two components during a visually guided saccade task: a short-latency phasi...

A Novel Virtual Reality Technique (Cervigame®) Compared to Conventional Proprioceptive Training to Treat Neck Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Background: Despite the potential benefits of virtual reality technology in physical rehabilitation, only a few studies have evaluated the efficacy of this type of treatment in patients with neck pain. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of virtual reality training (VRT) versus conventional proprioceptive training (CPT) in patients with neck pain. Methods: Forty four parti...

Eye muscle proprioception is represented bilaterally in the sensorimotor cortex.

The cortical representation of eye position is still uncertain. In the monkey a proprioceptive representation of the extraocular muscles (EOM) of an eye were recently found within the contralateral central sulcus. In humans, we have previously shown a change in the perceived position of the right eye after a virtual lesion with rTMS over the left somatosensory area. However, it is possible that...

Eye position representation in human anterior parietal cortex.

Eye position helps locate visual targets relative to one's own body and modulates the distribution of attention in visual space. Whereas in the monkey, proprioceptive eye position signals have been recorded in the somatosensory cortex, in humans, no brain site has yet been associated with eye position. We aimed to disrupt the proprioceptive representation of the right eye in the left somatosens...

Proprioceptive role for palisade endings in extraocular muscles: Evidence from the Jendrassik Maneuver

A proprioceptive hypothesis for the control of eye movements has been recently proposed based on neuroanatomical tracing studies. It has been suggested that the non-twitch motoneurons could be involved in modulating the gain of sensory feedback from the eye muscles analogous to the gamma (gamma) motoneurons which control the gain of proprioceptive feedback in skeletal muscles. We conducted beha...
